The Complete Belitung Activity Guide
From island hopping among granite archipelagos to batik workshops in Gantung, every great Belitung experience is covered here.
Water & BeachIsland Hopping the Kelayang Archipelago
Board a traditional wooden boat from Tanjung Kelayang and explore five to seven islands in one day: Batu Berlayar, Sand Island, Lengkuas Lighthouse, Kepayang, and the granite formations in between. Each stop offers something different — snorkeling, photography, lunch on the sand, or simply sitting quietly facing the sea.
Book a private boat for 2–6 people. Shared boats are cheaper but run on a fixed schedule. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
Water & BeachSnorkeling the Reef at Lengkuas Island
The eastern side of Lengkuas Island holds a healthy shallow reef between one and four meters deep. You will see clownfish in sea anemones, blue tang, brightly colored parrotfish, and if fortunate, a young sea turtle swimming slowly past. Average visibility is 10–15 meters in good weather.
Water & BeachKayaking Between Granite Boulders
Several tour operators at Tanjung Kelayang rent kayaks for independent exploration among the coastal granite formations. From the water's surface, the massive boulders feel far larger and more dramatic than from a boat. A popular route circles the northern side of the beach toward secluded small rocks where almost nobody goes.
Water & BeachFishing with Local Fishermen
Several fishermen around Tanjung Kelayang and Tanjung Pandan accept guests to join them at sea in the early morning. You will see how they set nets, read fish movement from water disturbances, and handle the catch. This experience appears in no tourist brochure — it must be sought directly or through a local guide who knows which fishermen welcome guests.
Water & BeachSand Island at Low Tide
This white sandbar exists for only a few hours each day. When the tide recedes, a clean sand island emerges from the sea, complete with large starfish stranded on its surface. Nothing compares to standing on land that, two hours from now, will be ocean again. Arrive on time or you will miss it.
Nature & AdventureClimbing to the Top of Lengkuas Lighthouse
This cast-iron lighthouse was built by the Dutch colonial government in 1882 and still functions today. Twelve floors of creaking iron stairs separate you from a 360-degree view over the Kelayang Archipelago — granite, turquoise sea, and an endless horizon. The lighthouse keeper, usually a middle-aged man who has lived there for years, will greet you warmly.
There is a small entry fee paid to the keeper. Bring cash.
Nature & AdventureBukit Peramun Canopy Bridge
This 100-meter wooden bridge spans between tropical treetops at 15 meters above the forest floor. From there, green canopy surrounds you on all sides. Below the planks, enormous granite roots and giant ferns. After the bridge, continue to the hilltop for a panorama of central Belitung's forest that few tourists ever see.
Nature & AdventureLeebong Island Mangrove Trail
A long boardwalk bisects the mangrove forest of Leebong Island from end to end. Below the planks at low tide: mangrove crabs moving across the mud, small shrimp, and aerial roots woven as tightly as a natural net. Endemic Belitung mangrove birds perch on low branches. No competing sounds except water trickling between roots.
Nature & AdventureCycling Around Tanjung Pandan
Tanjung Pandan is a flat small city that is easy to explore by bicycle. A popular route passes through the old Chinatown area of Siburik, the Tin Museum, the Kwan Im Temple, and ends at the waterfront of Tanjung Pendam Beach where fishing boats are moored. Bicycle rentals are available at several shops and hotels.
Nature & AdventureSunset on the Granite Boulders of Tanjung Tinggi
At 5:30 PM, climb onto one of the highest granite boulders at Tanjung Tinggi and wait. The light shifts from white to gold to deep orange. The granite reflects the same light, and its warm brown layers suddenly glow. This half-hour is the reason Tanjung Tinggi is more than just a beach for daytime photographs.
Nature & AdventureLandscape Photography at Kaolin Lake
A turquoise lake with chalk-white kaolin earthen edges is one of the most dramatic photography subjects in Indonesia. In the early morning before any wind, the lake surface reflects the sky perfectly. Wear contrasting colors — red, yellow, or orange — for a photo that stands out. Location: Sijuk area, about 20 minutes from Tanjung Pandan.
Culture & HistoryLaskar Pelangi Literary Trail
Visit three locations that form the universe of Laskar Pelangi: SD Muhammadiyah Gantung (the original school from the novel), Museum Kata Andrea Hirata in Gantung town center, and the coffee shop where Hirata often sat. The novel was published in 2005, Riri Riza's film released in 2008, and both have been translated into more than 40 languages. Reading the novel before visiting will transform this experience.
Gantung is in East Belitung, about 1.5 hours from Tanjung Pandan. Make it a full day to explore East Belitung.
Culture & HistoryBatik Workshop at Rumah Batik Ahok
In the childhood home of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in Gantung, local batik artisans teach hand-drawn and stamped batik techniques using Belitung's distinctive motifs: simpor leaves, lotus, grouper fish, and fishing boats. Belitung batik colors differ from Javanese — bright and sea-toned. You will take home your own creation.
Culture & HistoryIndonesian Tin Museum
A Dutch colonial building now housing a museum about the industry that shaped Belitung's identity. The collection includes mining equipment from every era, black-and-white photographs, mineral samples, and in the backyard — a colossal dredging ship that once floated on a man-made lake in the middle of the forest. Belitung without understanding its tin history is only half of Belitung.
Culture & HistoryKwan Im Temple
The largest Buddhist temple in Belitung, located across from Burung Mandi Beach. An 18-meter white marble statue of Goddess Kwan Im stands in the front courtyard facing the sea. Its architecture reflects Belitung's Chinese heritage with red glazed roofs and dragon and phoenix ornaments carved with extraordinary detail.
Belitung FoodTubruk Coffee at Kong Djie Siburik
This kopitiam in the Siburik area has been operating since the 1940s. Local robusta coffee is brewed tubruk — poured directly into the glass with boiling water, stirred, and left to settle. Strong, earthy, slightly bitter. Accompany with warm fried banana and listen to the unhurried morning conversations of Tanjung Pandan residents.
Belitung FoodMie Belitung Atep
The most legendary warung for Belitung noodles on Jalan Sriwijaya, Tanjung Pandan. A bowl of round yellow noodles in thick savory shrimp broth, accompanied by fried tofu, fresh cucumber, and melinjo crackers. The queue is real even on weekdays. Arrive early or be prepared to wait.
One portion is usually not enough. Order two from the start.
Belitung FoodGangan, Belitung Sour Fish Soup
Gangan is the most authentic dish of Belitung's Malay community: a fish soup made with turmeric, tamarind, young pineapple, and chilies that creates a sour, spicy, and savory flavor all at once. The fish used is usually fresh red snapper or pomfret. Available at most serious Belitung warungs. Ask your guide for their recommendation of the best one that day.
Belitung FoodTanjung Pandan Night Food Market
The Jalan Sriwijaya and central market area transforms after sunset. Carts and warungs materialize under neon lights, charcoal smoke hangs low, and the scent of grilled fish spreads. You can find mie Belitung, gangan, grilled seafood, satay, and street snacks all within one walkable area. This is not about efficiency. This is about slowing down.
Belitung FoodSeafood Lunch on Kepayang Island
Thatched-roof stalls at the beachfront of Kepayang Island serve a menu determined by that morning's fishing. Usually there is kakap or grouper grilled over coconut charcoal, battered fried squid, and large soft-shell crab with a choice of sauce. Eating here — with white sand underfoot and the boat anchored in front — is one of the most unforgettable moments of a Belitung trip.
